Postponement of the new universal payment form (TUP)

Published on 18 May 2025

The introduction of the new Titre Universel de Paiement (TUP) form, originally scheduled for 2 June 2025, has been postponed until 1 October 2025 due to technical reasons. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise payment processes in Luxembourg. Developed in collaboration with ABBL member banks and payment service providers (PSPs), and supported by Victor Buck Services, the new TUP aims to make payment handling more efficient and secure through better data structuring.

Summary

Transition timeline and co-existence of formats

To ensure a smooth and gradual transition, three versions of the TUP form are currently relevant. Each will follow a specific timeline:

    • Short version (current)
A condensed format currently in circulation.
No longer accepted after 1 October 2025.

    • Long unstructured version (current)
The existing full-length TUP form with non-structured data fields.
May still be used until 31 March 2026, alongside the new format.

    • Long structured version (new)
The redesigned TUP form with structured data fields, designed to improve automation and enhance payment security.
      Available from 1 October 2025.
Mandatory from 1 April 2026, becoming the only accepted format from that date.

This phased approach allows both individuals and organisations to update their tools and workflows in time, while supporting a seamless migration to the improved format.

What does this mean for users?

    • Retail customers will automatically receive the updated forms from their bank or payment service provider.
    • Corporate customers, public authorities and organisations are invited to contact their printer or download the specifications and production guidelines from the ABBL website: Payment standards – Titre Universel de Paiement (TUP)
